A Libertarian's Anthem            mp3
Hogeye Bill

(adapted from An Optimist's Anthem by Still on the Hill)

We've got troubles in the world
and sometimes it looks like we're losing.
All the obstacles before us
loom like dark and endless forests
and the sirens sell the easy way
to let ourselves be led astray
and help to turn the gov'ment gears
that grind us to detritus
as if doomed to be the slave of those
whose blinded vision brought this fate upon us.

But it doesn't have to be that way!
We can seize the day and move away
outside our statist prisons
above the drone's unreason
beyond the violent cycle
that has been a grim debacle
over and over from ruler to ruler
and over and over again.

'Cause the ones who would do evil
will be impotent without the ring of power.
They'll be blinded by the brightness
of a billion people's greatness
they can stand aside or join us
with no robbery among us
when nations work together
because people choose to love
no humanitarians with bombs
and guillotines decree it from above.
No it doesn't have to be that way!
We can seize the day and move away
outside our statist prisons
above the drone's unreason
beyond the violent cycle
that has been a grim debacle
over and over from ruler to ruler
and over and over again.

We've got rulers with the power
and what's worse people willing to follow.
For your nation serve your country
be a hero kill the enemy
Rob your neighbor for public good
mandatory brotherhood
Mistaking manmade law for justice
State become a god
Patriotic servitude
is processed people sprouted from a pod.
But it doesn't have to be that way!
We can seize the day and move away
outside our statist prisons
above the drone's unreason
beyond the violent cycle
that has been a grim debacle
over and over from ruler to ruler
and over and over again.
